Top 5 Free Google Chrome Extensions for SEO Keyword Research

Keyword research is the often-overlooked process of discovering keyword ideas for website content, analyzing the search volume of each keyword, and auditing the top competing domains in the search results. While there are plenty of SEO tools available for conducting in-depth keyword research (such as Semrush and Ahrefs), most of these tools come with a price tag that might be unaffordable for small businesses or freelance SEOs.

Fortunately, there are plenty of free SEO extensions for Google Chrome available with most of the same features as the paid tools. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the top 5 free Google Chrome extensions for SEO keyword research:

  1. Keyword Surfer
  2. SeoStack Keyword Tool
  3. Keywords Everywhere – Keyword Tool
  4. Ubersuggest
  5. FATRANK

1. Keyword Surfer

Keyword Surfer shows you search volumes for keywords directly in Google search results pages (SERPS) from any country of your choice. With Keyword Surfer added to your Google Chrome browser, search on Google for a target phrase and you’ll monthly search volume and estimated Cost-per-Click for bidding on Google Ads.

Keyword Surfer displays keyword search volume and estimated Cost-per-Click bid in the Google search bar.

In the right column of the SERP you’ll find related keyword ideas and their monthly search volume. This can be a great way to drill into a topic to find targeted keyword ideas. Keyword Surfer also shows you a few “Correlation charts”, where you can see a range of insights into each of the top 10 search results:

  • Estimated monthly traffic volumes for the domain
  • Word count for the top-ranking pages
  • Number of exact keywords used on the page

2. SeoStack Keyword Tool

SeoStack Keyword Tool is my go-to Google Chrome extension for finding long-tail keyword ideas. SeoStack Keyword Tool can grab suggestions from a range of search engines including Google, YouTube, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Amazon and Pinterest.

To get long-tail keyword ideas, first enter in a seed keyword in the left column. Specify which search engines you want to get results from, as well as the country and language you are targeting. SeoStack Keyword Tool will display the list of keyword suggestions, which you can easily export to a CSV file, or send to the Google Ads Keyword Planner to get search volume and Cost-per-Click data.

3. Keywords Everywhere – Keyword Tool

Keywords Everywhere – Keyword Tool is a freemium Google Chrome extension that provides related search terms and search volume trends as a widget in search results pages. Unfortunately this extension does not display the actual search volume – only the monthly trend. You’ll need to buy credits from Keywords Everywhere to see the actual search volume numbers.

Keywords Everywhere is particularly powerful for keyword research on YouTube. When searching for a keyword on YouTube, you’ll see the global search volume trend for the search term, as well as the top channel associated with that keyword and their channel metrics.

This tool also uncovers the keyword tags associated with a YouTube video. Simply go to any video page on YouTube and Keywords Everywhere will display the video tags on the right of the page.

4. Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest is a free Google Chrome extension from Neil Patel. This extension adds a widget to your Google search results pages that displays related keywords for your search term. A unique feature of Ubersuggest is that it also provides the monthly search volume, estimated cost-per-click, and the ‘Search Difficulty’ for the related keywords.

Ubersuggest also displays the Domain Authority score, traffic and social shares for each of the top pages in Google search results. If you are aiming to produce content to compete with the top ranking pages for a specific keyword, you could face an uphill battle if your website Domain Authority score is much lower than the top ranking websites.

Ubersuggest has a few other features as well, such as providing keyword suggestions and related questions. However, you’ll need to click through to Neil Patel’s website to use the additional features, so I do not consider those to be part of the Google Chrome extension.

5. FATRANK

Once you’re optimizing your page content for target keywords, you’ll want to keep an eye on your page rankings. FATRANK is a free rank tracking Google Chrome extension created by link building agency FATJOE. The FATRANK extension shows you the ranking position of any web page in Google search results for a given keyword.

To use FATRANK, simply go to the page that you want to check, run the FATRANK extension and enter in the target keyword. This is an easy way to perform spot checks on your web pages to monitor changes in specific keyword rankings on the fly.
